Sleep 'n Spin

Max has really been taking advantage of all the new space he has in his big boy crib. Often we will go get him in the morning and find that he has scooted his way down to the opposite end. His latest trick, however, is turning in circles while he sleeps.

Check out these sneak peeks from the baby monitor:

10:31pm- Head toward the top of the crib and feet toward the bottom

2:53am- Feet toward the left side rail and head toward the right side rail (sorry it was so blurry... at 3:00 in the morning I'm not the best photographer... haha!)

6:18am- Head toward lower left corner and feet toward upper right corner

Talented, huh? ;-)

Initiated into Parenthood

It was our first night home from the hospital as a family of three. We made it through a family nap, dinner, getting our hospital bags unpacked, and some snuggly time with our sweet baby boy. My milk had started to come in and Max was nursing, peeing, and pooping like a champ. Generally speaking we were feeling pretty good about our novice parenting skills.

Around 10:00pm Ben and I decided we were ready to turn in for the night so we changed in to our pajamas and brushed our teeth. Before we went to bed Max needed one last feeding and a diaper change. Simple, right? The feeding went fine and Ben picked him up from my lap to take him over to the diaper change station we have set-up in our bedroom. Due to Max's healing circumcision and umbilical cord stump and our lack of experience with wiggly newborn babies, diaper changes are often a two person affair. Ben laid Max down on the changing pad and we started to prepare the diaper, wipes, gauze and petroleum jelly (for the circumcision), etc. Max started to fuss and when we went to take off his dirty diaper we realized he'd peed out the top and was laying in a big puddle!

The baby was surprisingly not that upset and we were laughing and trying not to panic, as we exclaimed, "Oh my gosh! What do we do?!" to each other. The poor kid was drenched and even his hair was dripping wet with pee. Ben got to work drying him and the changing pad off with a burp cloth while I tried to dry off the baby. We knew a general drying off after laying in a puddle of urine wouldn't cut it so we decided to give him an unexpected first sponge bath!

I got everything set-up on the counter in the kitchen and Ben worked on more drying up in the bedroom and then brought a damp baby Max out from the bedroom. We stripped him down until he was in his "birthday suit" with the exception of the gauze covering his circumcision wound (insert ominous foreshadowing music), and started washing him the way we learned in our infant care class. Being excited parents we snapped a few photos and this short video to capture this "first".

Suddenly, liquid green poop came shooting out of Max's bottom! It went all over the towel he was laying on  on the counter and sprayed on to the floor. The laughing and, "What do we do?!" exclamations started up again, and we tried to act quickly so our semi-clean baby wouldn't roll in the mess. Ben lifted the baby and I folded the towel in half and tried to cover up the poop. As I was working on cleaning poop off Max's feet, legs, and bottom Ben worked on cleaning up the mess on the floor. Boom! Max sprayed liquid poop again! Unfortunately this time some landed on poor Ben in the process. At least he already had cleaning supplies out, right?

We worked together to get a clean diaper on Max, finished up his bath, and got him dressed and swaddled for the night. After calming the baby and sanitizing the kitchen we finally got to bed ourselves (two hours after we started the process) and decided that we have officially been initiated in to parenthood.

Let the fun begin. :-)
