Now that Max is growing out of the newborn stage we have started introducing a wider variety of activity during his awake periods. In the last few days we have started giving him time on his activity mat. As he gets older the mat will become really fun for him. There are different textures, some pieces fold up, there are lights, music, and noisemakers.
For now, though, we have just been putting him under the arches that have toys hanging down. In the center there is a flower with a ring of beads that hangs just within his reach. At first his hands would hit it when he was doing his normal jerky baby movements, but after a few times there was a look of recognition in his face as though he was understanding that he was making it swing around. He's certainly gotten the hang of it and we are 99% sure he now bats it around intentionally! It's so cool to see him make these little brain connections.
Sometimes while Max is playing hard he'll get a really intense look in his eyes and his arms and legs start moving really, really fast. It's hysterical!
